Ithaca: The Journey Inwards

Amanae Emotional Release and Regulation Bodywork can be seen as a journey into that intimate territory we inhabit: the body as home, the country of our emotions, the universe that we are.

A territory that may be unfamiliar. Sometimes we live in our bodies without ever really having the time or space to listen to their sensations, memories, impulses, ways of protecting themselves and ways of expressing themselves.

The body is the gateway into this inner world. A place from which we can explore what is felt, what has been learned to be held back, and what may be waiting to be acknowledged.

Amanae Emotional Regulation does not seek to lead us towards a predetermined destination. It is not about fixing ourselves, changing ourselves, or becoming someone different. It is about finding a space in which we can pause, listen, and allow something from that inner world to emerge.

Like any journey, this one has its own rhythms. There are familiar places and others that are discovered for the first time. There are moments of expansion and moments of stillness, pause and contemplation. There is no way of knowing beforehand what will be found, what will emerge, or where the path will lead.

And perhaps this is part of the richness of the journey: not the idea of knowing ourselves, but the living experience of encountering ourselves.

Discovering the home we inhabit. Exploring its rooms. Recognising its landscapes. Approaching what has been left in some forgotten corner. Discovering places that may never have been visited before. And, little by little, feeling more at home within ourselves.

Ithaca, then, is not necessarily a place to arrive at. It is an invitation to embark on a journey.

A journey into the body.
A journey inwards.
The infinite journey towards ourselves.

Ithaka

As you set out for Ithaka
hope your road is a long one,
full of adventure, full of discovery.
Laistrygonians, Cyclops,
angry Poseidon—don’t be afraid of them:
you’ll never find things like that on your way
as long as you keep your thoughts raised high,
as long as a rare excitement
stirs your spirit and your body.
Laistrygonians, Cyclops,
wild Poseidon—you won’t encounter them
unless you bring them along inside your soul,
unless your soul sets them up in front of you.
Hope your road is a long one.
May there be many summer mornings when,
with what pleasure, what joy,
you enter harbors you’re seeing for the first time;
may you stop at Phoenician trading stations
to buy fine things,
mother of pearl and coral, amber and ebony,
sensual perfume of every kind—
as many sensual perfumes as you can;
and may you visit many Egyptian cities
to learn and go on learning from their scholars.
Keep Ithaka always in your mind.
Arriving there is what you’re destined for.
But don’t hurry the journey at all.
Better if it lasts for years,
so you’re old by the time you reach the island,
wealthy with all you’ve gained on the way,
not expecting Ithaka to make you rich.
Ithaka gave you the marvelous journey.
Without her you wouldn't have set out.
She has nothing left to give you now.
And if you find her poor, Ithaka won’t have fooled you.
Wise as you will have become, so full of experience,
you’ll have understood by then what these Ithakas mean.
