No guilt

When the body perceives an intense threat, it doesn’t always shift into fight or flight. Sometimes, the response is to become still.

This state, known as “freeze” or tonic immobility, is an automatic survival mechanism of the nervous system, activated when fighting or escaping aren’t possible options.

In that moment, the brain—especially areas like the amygdala and the brainstem—interprets that the safest strategy is to immobilize: the body contracts, voluntary movement is inhibited, and a sense of emotional disconnection or dissociation may arise.

It’s as if the system says: “If I can’t get out of this, it’s better to stay still and get through it without making it worse.”

This response is involuntary; it doesn’t come from a conscious decision. That’s why it’s so important to understand:

🔹 Paralysis is not consent
🔹 Remaining still does not mean you wanted it
🔹 Your body responded in the best way it could to protect you

Recognizing this response and releasing it from judgment is an essential part of trauma healing.
